What Factors Affect Veterans Disability Benefits Ratings?
Before any veteran can begin receiving VA disability benefits, they must receive a disability rating from the VA to document their level of impairment and the benefits they can receive.
These ratings are assigned based on how the condition affects the veteran’s everyday life.
To arrive at a numerical score, VA disability benefits claims processors evaluate important information that portrays the severity of the disability and how it affects the veteran:
- Submitted Evidence - Medical records, personal records, doctor statements, and other related records submitted with the disability claim as proof of service-related condition.
- C&P Exam Findings - Results of VA-mandated Compensation and Pension exams performed during the claims process.
- Other Pertinent Information - Military records, personal, buddy, and employer statements supporting the claim and any other information that can further support the veteran’s request for VA disability benefits due to their disability.
How Does the VA Calculate Veterans Disability Benefits Ratings?
When calculating a veteran’s impairment rating so they can receive appropriate disability benefits, the VA works in percentages, with each person’s body considered to be 100% at the start.
During claims processing, the processor will determine a percentage of disability for each condition as supported by the evidence submitted by the veteran.
These percentages are then subtracted using a specific formula from the starting point of 100% to determine an overall percentage of disability, whether that includes one condition or several.
Disability benefits are then paid according to the final percentage of disability recognized by the VA.
How Are Combined Disability Ratings Determined?
While it is easy to understand the ratings math for a single disability, things can get complicated when additional conditions are claimed, as these secondary percentages are not simply added to the primary ratings percentage.
Instead, the VA uses a combined ratings table to determine a veteran’s total disability rating for which they can receive benefits.
This is done by ranking all disability ratings from highest to lowest and then finding the VA-determined disability benefits percentage on the combined rating chart.
This number usually turns out to be more than the highest disability rating but slightly less than the total of the combined ratings.
If there are more than two rated conditions, the same calculation is made by starting this time with the combined percentage of the first two conditions and adding each additional percentage as a separate calculation.
