Serious skin conditions are among the most common veterans disability claims submitted today by veterans of the Gulf War.
With many veterans experiencing debilitating skin conditions long after their military service and filing related disability claims, the VA now recognizes several skin problems as service-connected conditions for Gulf War veterans.
Veterans deployed in the Persian Gulf who were exposed to chemicals and other environmental hazards during their service can file disability claims for certain presumed and service-connected skin conditions to receive benefits according to their degree of disability.
What Is A Presumed Condition On A Veterans Disability Claim?
Veterans filing a VA disability claim to receive benefits for an illness or condition they developed due to their military service are usually required to provide evidence proving service connection.
Due to the similarities in many veteran disability claims and the specific circumstances discovered to have caused these conditions, there are now some conditions which are presumed to be service-connected with no need to provide that proof being necessary.
Based on the VA’s acknowledgment of conditions related to service in the Gulf War, several skin problems are presumed to be service-connected.
A diagnosis of a presumed condition is all the veteran needs to receive a disability rating and begin receiving disability benefits.
What Presumed Gulf War Skin Conditions Does The VA Recognize?
Eligibility to file a veterans disability claim for a presumptive Gulf War skin condition is limited to those who served in the Gulf region since August 2, 1990.
This covers anyone who served in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and other Southwest Asia and Pacific regions.
There are three presumptive skin conditions recognized by the VA when diagnosed in qualifying eligible veterans who are presumed to have been exposed to toxic chemicals:
- Chronic Dermatitis - Inflamed, itchy, and reddened skin causing pain as well as discomfort and requiring long-term treatment.
- Eczema - Patches of red, flaky, cracking, and blistering skin that become extremely painful and can be difficult to treat.
- Psoriasis - Red, scaly, painful patches caused by an autoimmune disorder that can severely impact a person’s quality of life.
Does The VA Recognize Any Other Service-Connected Skin Conditions?
In addition to the three presumptive skin conditions noted above, veterans disability claims may also be filed by eligible Gulf War veterans receiving diagnoses for several other primary or secondary skin problems.
Although these conditions are also notable in Gulf War veterans, those filing disability claims for these conditions must establish service connection as in any other claim to receive a disability rating and receive benefits.
These conditions include:
- Chronic Fungal Infections - Persistent, painful ringworm, athlete’s foot, and other fungal conditions.
- Seborrheic Dermatitis - Scaly, itchy, and flaky skin patches diagnosed in many Gulf War veterans.
- Chronic Urticaria (Hives) - Red, itchy, raised welts commonly triggered by stress and environmental factors in Gulf War veterans.
- Rosacea - A condition producing redness, pustules, and visible blood vessels in the skin, which worsens in many Gulf War veterans.
- Pruritus or Itching - An uncomfortable and itchy systemic disorder that can be associated with other Gulf War conditions.
- Folliculitis and Acne - Inflammation of the hair follicles commonly diagnosed in Gulf War veterans exposed to environmental contaminants and stressors.
