What Is the Aid and Attendance Benefit?
The Aid and Attendance benefit is a veterans service related disability asset that provides additional funding to veterans who are housebound or require the assistance of home care aid to help them with their daily functioning.
This benefit is paid in addition to veterans service related disability pay and is intended to pay for the added cost of having an aide come to the home or to help pay for an assisted living facility or nursing home care.
This benefit is also available to surviving spouses of eligible veterans who meet the requirements.
Who Is Eligible for Aid and Attendance Benefits?
The Aid and Attendance benefit is a veterans resource that is available to veterans that meet certain military, physical, and financial requirements as follows:
Military Requirements - Both must apply:
- Those seeking this veterans service related disability pay benefit must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least 1 day being during a wartime period.
- Veterans must have an honorable discharge.
Physical Requirements - At least two must apply:
- The veteran requires the assistance of another person to perform daily tasks such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and eating.
- The veteran must stay in bed most of the day due to an illness.
- The veteran’s eyesight is limited to 5/200, even with corrective lenses, or they have a visual impairment due to a concentric visual field of 5 degrees or less.
Net Worth and Income Limits - All must apply:
- The veteran and their spouse must meet certain countable income and pension rate limits to be eligible for this veterans service related disability benefit, income that includes regular income, social security income, and any retirement income.
- The veteran seeking these veterans resources must also qualify for a VA pension based on their countable income and maximum annual pension rate to receive this additional benefit.
- The veteran must also meet a maximum net worth amount to be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit. The maximum net worth for 2023, including all social security and pension payments as well as any other assets such as investments and personal property (but excluding vehicles and personal homes), is $150,538.
- Surviving spouses of eligible veterans may collect this benefit as long as they also meet the net worth and income limits as described.
